In the late ’90s, a company named Mylan PLC announced its $4.6 billion acquisition of CVS Health Inc., which includes Mylan’s Mylan brand of generic Viagra. Mylan, which had already acquired CVS for about $1.7 billion, had already been the market leader for Viagra, its only competitor in the U. S. since the mid-2000s. CVS had already been a market leader in the same segment until a competitor, CVS Caremark Inc., in 2002, was pulled from the market. The acquisition of Mylan was a major move for CVS, because Mylan’s product line for Viagra included about 25 million pills and that number was expected to drop by about a third when the generic competitor’s patent expires in the near future. The move was not immediately made, however, since Pfizer’s patent for Viagra expired in November 2004.
The acquisition of Mylan was not the only attempt by Pfizer to acquire Viagra. In the 1990s, Pfizer and CVS merged to form CVS Health Corp. Pfizer, one of the largest drug manufacturers in the U. S., had just announced that it would merge with Pfizer Inc. The merger was not part of Pfizer’s deal to acquire CVS. CVS, however, was still the leader in prescription drugs for women, and the drug companies had begun to produce generic versions of Viagra.
